Did you know that 8 out of 10 Americans have some degree of gum disease and may not even realize it? The fact is that gum disease is extremely prevalent in dental patients. When it appears in its earliest form, known as gingivitis, it may not show any symptoms and is completely reversible with diligent at home dental care and regular visits to your dentist.
Gum disease is caused by bacteria that infects your gums and jawbones. The bacteria, and chemical by-products of your bodies attempt to fight the bacteria, can enter the blood stream and cause serious problems in distant parts of the body. For this reason, gum disease has been implicated as a causative factor in heart disease, stroke, diabetes, pre-mature births, and low birth weight.
It critical to have your teeth professionally cleaned and a thorough examination of your mouth performed at least twice a year. Proper at home cleaning to include brushing twice a day, flossing and using preventative mouth washes can also prevent the onset of gingivitis.
