A majority of patients that visit our office after chipping a tooth, visit in order to receive a cosmetic repair. However, there are some patients that chip teeth and call the office to inquire if anything is really necessary to restore their smile.
For a majority of patients we always recommend that dental chips be repaired. Our response and treatment plan will vary depending on the size of the chip in your tooth and often the cause of the chipped tooth – however we generally will always recommend a repair. A chipped tooth equals a significant loss of tooth structure and can even contribute to new chips in the future and cracks in the enamel over time.
If a chipped tooth is damaged extensively, the chip could affect the function and comfort of the nerve inside your tooth leading to a “dead” tooth, discoloration, and even extreme pain. Depending on the location of your tooth you may opt for a root canal treatment to repair the nerve, a crown or veneer to restore its appearance or even a dental extraction and tooth replacement. For minor chips, dental bonding may be available to repair the appearance of your tooth.
